In "October" the author introduces us to Shylock, a Shakespearean character, from "The Merchant of Venice".   Holling and Mrs. Baker are discussing Shylock's character on page 48.  Would you say Holling and his sister are similar to or different from to Shylock.  Support your answer with details from the story.

On page 48 in "November", Holling's dad cuts the lawn again after Holling has just cut it.  What kind of relationship do you think Holling has with his Dad.  Support you answer with details from the story.

  1. After reading chapter October and reading the question I think Holling and his sister are similar to Shylock. Holling is similar to Shylock because his dad is making him tolerate Mrs. Baker and is controlling most if not all of his life He hasn't said anything but I think he wants to more than "The son who is going to inherit Hoodhood and Associates". His sister is revolting against her dad for controlling her life. She wants to be a Flower child a person all about peace and harmony. I think the book is also foreshadowing that the sister will be moving to California when his sister says on page 9 "If I were you I'd head to California". For the second question I think his dad recuts the lawn because he is obsesed with perfection showing he does trie to control everything he can because he might think things are falling apart with another war and civil rights movement. The dad wants Holling to do everything his way this makes Holling annoyed that his father thinks he can't do things right.

    1. Yeah that's so true because Shylock is getting treated the same way that Holling is.

  4. Holling and his sister can relate to Shylock because the are being controlled by there dad and being forced to do things they don't want to do. So, Holling wants to get someone on his side about Mrs. Baker but his dad is forcing him to respect Mrs. Baker because he wants the architect job from Mrs. Bakers family emporium. His sister relates to Shylock because she wants to be a flower girl but her dad does not like that and is forcing against her for trying to be a flower girl. So, they both relate to Shylock.

    1. I think because she continues to be a flower girl, that she actually is not like Shylock because she is sticking to her beliefs, even though she is disappointing people.

  5. I think the relationship Holling has with his dad is not so good as most kids. I think that Hollings dad believes what ever Hollings does he can do it better that him.

  6. I think Shylock is like Holling and his sister. I think his sister is like him because she believes she is meant to become a flower child. Holling on the other hand thinks he has to be like his father, he questions his sister about why would he want to be a flower child in the first place. Also because both of their parents are deciding what the are going to be and what is going to happen in their life, they won't let her be a flower child. That is how Holling and his sister relate to Shylock.

    2. Nice job really using evidence from the text Iris! I agree with you because Shylock and Holling plus his sister all really do have their futures planned out for them by their parents.

  7. Holling and Shylock are similar, but Shylock is not like Holling's sister. Shylock is someone who wants to become who he's suppose to be, even though he doesn't like who he's suppose to be. Holling is also suppose to become who he is suppose to be by pleasing his parents and taking over the business. Holling's sister just is who she wants to be, not what her parents want her to be. She doesn't listen to them. I think the relationship between Holling and his dad is bad because his dad ignores him and has little trust in him.

  9. I think that Holling and his sister have a similar life compared to Shylock. I state this because His dad ants him to do what he wants just like Shylock's dad. I think Holling has a bad relationship with his dad. I say this because his dad mainly only cares about money. I think Holling doesn't trust hid dad since he won't even try to help Holling with his own problems.

  11. Holling and his sister in my opinion, think in the same way. There parents are crazy. His sister wanted to be a flower girl. (which her Dad did not allow.) It was dinnertime and she walked downstairs with a flower tattoo on her face, her father was not fond of this. In november, She walked in when Holling was practicing, and did not act too nice. She slammed the door open and threatened Holling which makes me think there relationship is not too strong. Like i said earlier, they might think in the same way but do not have a close relationship...

    1. I disagree with you Owen because Holling and Sara actually do not seem to think the same way in my opinion. Sara doesn't really like anything about what Holling is trying to do. For example, went Holling is practicing Shakespeare in front of the mirror, she calls him weird and tells him to put his shirt back on. it seems as though Sara doesn't care for what Holling is doing and does her own thing. Holling however is deeply interested in Shakespeare and loves what he is doing unlike his sister. Therefore I do not believe that Holling and Sara think the same way.

  12. Holling and his sister can both compare to shylock because they are being bossed around by there dads and being pushed into things they don't want to do. Because of this, Holling wants to convince someone to be on his side with Mrs. Baker but Hollings dad is forcing Holling to do as he says so he can get the Archetect for Mrs.Bakers family business. Holling sister can relate to shylock because she wants to be a flower girl. The thing is, Hollings dad is rebelling the fact that she wants to be a flower girl. These are the reasons why they both relate to shylock.

  13. In my opinion, i think Holling and his dads relationship is some what ok. I say this because when ever Holling does something he doesn't do it perfect. Since this was back in the 1960, it was the great decade of the perfect life. This meant that everything was perfect or had to be perfect. Also Holling dad wanted to have everything to be perfect, so that i is why Mr. hood re-cut the lawn

    1. I agree but in your post you might want to go back and add more details. His dad is a perfectionist because he was raised in the 1950s also called the perfect time.

  14. The relationship between Holling and his dad is not so good. They really don't share ideas it's always his dad's way. Also his dad doesn't respect his opinion on things. They don't really have a relationship expect Holling just being his son that he can boss around.

  15. I think the reason the author ended a chapter on the tragedy was because Holling will never be able to be himself. This is because his 'perfect dad' wants a 'perfect son' who will inherit his job. Holling does not really care, but his sister is rebelling and wants to be a flower child. Holling's dad being from the 50s is very angry when his children are imperfect. he thinks holling is imperfect when he says Mrs. Bakers hates him. Mr. Hoodhood thinks Holling's sister is imperfect when she wants to be a flower child.

  16. I think that Shylock is treated similarly to Holling and Sara. For example, Holling wanted somebody on his side about Mrs. Baker, but since his dad wanted the important job, he told him to show some respect. Another example being that Sara wanted to be a flower child, but her dad forces it on her that she isnt allowed to be.

    1. I agree with you Fiona. It seems as though Mr. Hoodhood only wants what is best for the family not what each individual person from the family wants. Like you said about how Holling and Sara don't really have a choice because their dad wants to get this big job. Great job!

      Delete
    2. In my opinion, Holling and Sara don't really have a choice about what they want to do. it's only what is good for the family business and making sure that Mr. Hoodhood gets the big business deal with Mrs.Baker's family store and asked Holling to never disrespect Mrs.Baker so as she will not think badly of their family and ask Mr. Hoodhood's architect company to be their architect. The same situation with Holling's sister, Sara. She wants to be a flower child or somebody who is beautiful and believes in peace, understanding, and freedom. When she comes downstairs with a painted flower on her cheek however, her father tells her she cannot be a flower child because he is a very important architect and is a candidate for an architect for The Chamber of Commerce Businessman of 1967. Therefore he can't have any daughter of his a flower child or as he calls them- a hippie.

  17. In the chapter December I think that it seems as though everything is against Holling from his perspective and mine. For example, Mr.Goldman is making Holling be a fairy named Ariel in the Shakespeare play he is producing. He is forced to wear bright yellow tights with a feathered tail. Adding on to that conflict is the fact that Mickey Mantle is going to be at Mrs.Baker's family store until 9:30 at night and Holling's play ends at 9:15 and he has no way to get there since his father is not there. Even more so, while Holling is rushing to go to see Mickey, the room where his real clothes are is locked and he has to leave in his costume. He makes it onto a bus for free and when he finally gets there, Mickey tells Holling that he doesn't give his autograph to boys in tights. All in all, Holling doesn't have the greatest day at all and it proves that this chapter really was all odds against Holling.

  18. In October, Shylock, Holling, and Holling's sister are alike in a way. Holling and Shylock are alike because the dad is taking control of his life. Holling's sister and Shylock are alike because the dad is making her the child that only he wants. He is not letting her do what she wants. In conclusion, Shylock, Holling, and Holling's sister are all alike in one way or another.

  19. Holling, Shylock, and Holling's sister are very alike in the book. First of all, Holling's sister and shylock are alike because the dad is making the sister the girl she doesn't want to be. Holling and shylock are alike because Holling's dad is trying to take control of Holling's life.

  20. In the chapter December, Not many things are going well for Holling. First, Mr. Goldman made Holling wear a fairy costume in front of an entire audience. (which he was not happy about.) After the play was over, Holling really needed to get his ball signed by Mickey Mantle. He waited outside for his parents but they did not show up. Like 5 minutes later a bus pulled in and he managed to get a free bus ride... He arrived and ran in to get his baseball signed. But one of his favorite baseball players put him down because of what he was wearing.. Holling didn't get hi ball signed. As you can see, This day in particular, did not go so well for Holling. So later he went home to his happy family and of course they didn't really care..

    1. I agree but you should probably mention how Holling got the baseball and that he didn't change after the play. Also there is a typo, instead of 'his' you wrote 'hi'

  21. Holling is spending December trying to convince his perfect parents not to make him do the play where he has to dress up as a fairy in yellow tights, doing the the play and being rejected. When Mrs. Baker announces that Holling is doing a Shakespeare play Holling dose not think any thing could be worse people actually show up at the play! When Hollings part is over he rushes to the locker room to put on his normal clothes only to find it locked and then he gets a bus and remembers he forgot his baseball to be signed by Mickey Mantels but gets one only to have it rejected by Mickey Mantels because of his costume.

  22. I would say that Holling and his sister are alike with Shylock. For example, they both get bossed around and are told what to do and don't like what they're told. Holling relates to Shylock because he wants someone with him on Wednesdays when he is at school alone with Mrs. Baker. His dad tells him to respect her because he's just in for architect job from the Baker's emporium. Holling's sister is alike with Shylock because she wants to be flower girl but her dad is against her and doesn't want her to be a flower girl. That's why they are all alike.

  23. I think the relationship between Holling and his dad is thumbs down because his dad barely even pays attention to him. He also can't trust HIS OWN SUN.
