Ms. Grace Literature Circle

Welcome to our Literature Group.  We will be reading and blogging The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt over the course of several weeks.  Below is a short story summary.

The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt Holling Hoodhood is a 7th grader in 1967. Initially, he believes that his teacher hates his guts because he doesn’t fall into the category of students who go to religious classes on Wednesdays. Since Holling is the only Presbyterian child in school at that time, he is the only one that stays for school on Wednesdays, where the other students go to either Saint Adelbert's or Temple Beth-El. At first, Mrs. Baker assigns him too much work, but then teaches him about the writings of Shakespeare

Observe the book cover and read the short summary above to make a prediction about the story's theme and author's purpose.  Post your thoughts and ideas and respond to one other classmate's post.

  1. I Have already read this book so I wont really spoil anything. So, I will only go by the cover. I think this kid is having a hard time In school and its just going to get worse. His dad doesn't back him up against his teacher because she part owns an emporium that his dad might end up planning because he wants the job so bad. So, I don't think his school problem is going to get any better. So, this might be what happens or it might not because I just went by the cover and the summary.

    2. By what you said, I agree with you. I also think that Hoodhood's time in school is going to get worse like you said. But I think in the end that the problem will get resolved finally.

  2. In the book Wednesday Wars I think that since he is the only student in the classroom on Wednesdays there will be conflicts when he is with his teach that he believes hates his guts. If I go by the cover I see two rats and Hollings kind of being surprised by the rats. From the cover I think that he is going to have problems with the rats. Also there is a book on his desk. I think the book on his desk is ShakeSpear, the book him and his teacher Mrs. Baker are reading.

    1. I agree with Iris that the rats will be a problem in the future. But I think the conflict between Mrs. Baker and Holling will eventually be resolved.

    2. Nice response, Iris! Nice detail from the story. That is also what I was thinking, too because judging from the cover I think he will have problems with the rats! :)

  3. After looking at the summary and the front cover. I have a feeling that the rats are going to be a reoccurring problem in the book. Also I am starting to think he might over time enjoy reading Shakespeare and get bullied for it. I think Holling and Mrs. Baker will stop hating each others gut maybe even be friends. The theme of the book might be don't judge a book by its cover.

  4. After seeing the cover I thought that the rats would play a role on Wednesdays. I also thought that the authors purpose was to show his troubles on Wednesdays.

    1. I agree with you that the rats are going to take a part in the story because if they weren't why would they be on the cover of a book.

    2. I agree as well Owen because of the cover. It shows that something bad might happen on Wednesdays. Owen S.

  5. After reading the summary and looking at the cover, I think this going to be a great book with a little bit of everything. I mostly think that this book is going to be funny because when I saw the rats running all over the place, I started to giggle. I think the authors purpose about this story is to entertain the reader so that he/she will keep on reading.

    2. Wow! Great response Will! I like the way you expressed how you felt on this book. I agree because it will have a little bit of everything. He is probably going to be a regular kid who is having a lot of trouble in school with his teacher. Anyway, great response and I laughed to at the rats running, too!

  6. I think the book Wednesday Wars will be funny because I can imagine the rats maybe running around in a classroom or anywhere. Overall I think there will be a little of every thing in this book. I think the author's purpose is to not make the reader bored but to make them keep reading the book.

  7. I think that during the school year things aren't going to get better just by looking at the cover. Holling on the cover looks very stressed out.

  8. I think Holling is not very good at school because he is reading a little book and getting angry. Also I think the school is old and has rats. This is only from the cover nothing else.

  9. Holling Hoodhood and Mrs. Baker, not a good match. This year is not going to turn out so great because every Wednesday all the kids in Holling's class leave for church except for himself and Mrs. Baker the teacher. They get into all kinds of mischieve together and Holling has trouble with her. But that's all he's got on his back, what else could go wrong...
