  1. My thoughts comparing the first version and the second version is how Holling was feeling when writing the essay then re-writing the essay. Since things were dark, grey, damp, and dirty between the two, Holling feelings were grey, not all happy... Thats why I think he wrote the essay the way he did before. Then when he talked to Meryl Lee, to see she was crying under those glasses, his feelings softened, changing. Like Holling cared for her, his feelings affecting how he felt about Romeo and Juliet.

    2. My response was really similar in the fact that Holling and Meryl-lee like each other and that changes Holling's view on Romeo and Juliet. Great job.

    3. Ya totally true! That's why he made the two different essays. One with bad feelings and one with good and happy feelings. I agree that her crying under the glasses really changed the way he felt about Meryl. Very nice comment!

    4. Good Response! Nice telling about how Holling became softer and changed when he saw Meryl-Lee crying, and how that affected his second essay. Overall, great!

  2. The relationship between Meryl Lee and Holling are that they both like each other towards the beginning of the story. At the end when she tells her dad about the plan for the middle school Holling gets mad about that, but right after the part where she takes of her glasses and he see her teary dry face his feelings change for her. The essays happen around the same time as the Meryl Lee problem. So, that changes his feelings about Romeo and Juliet. The First essay he said that Romeo was not a very smart person and shouldn't have got together with Juliet. He wrote this because his feelings for Meryl Lee where in dark times and grim. Once he wrote the second essay his feelings toward her where restored so he wrote a new essay that didn't have anything bad to say about Romeo. So, his essays changed when his feelings in the real world changed.

    3. That is very true Luke! Very nice job! I agree with you because that is exactly what he was feeling when he wrote the first essay! The glasses part was when he turned his feelings. That is what you said! That is what made him change his essay and make it more bright and good! All in all, very good response!

  3. My reflect on the relationship between Holling and Meryl Lee is that Meryl had a crush on Holling. Then earlier in the book, Holling called her a blind mole. So, when he asked her to do something on Valentine's Day, she denied him because of that. Then, she reconsidered and said yes to him. This affected Holling's first version of the essay he wrote with Mrs. Baker because he was mad that she said no. Holling wrote bad things on his paper about Romeo and Juliet. When Meryl Lee said yes to him later, Holling wrote a better version of Romeo and Juliet with the good things about it. I'm Pretty sure that he got a better grade on the second version.

    2. Excellent work! I like the fact that you went back in the very beginning of the book and found those details.

  4. Comparing Holling and Meryl-lee, makes me think about how Meryl-lee is pretty sneaky for stealing the ideas for the new high school from Holling. But Holling isn't really like that. He kind of just does what he does and then moves on to the next thing. He doesn't try to do anything he isn't supposed to do.But they do both have some kind of feelings for each other. Meryl-lee has liked Holling for a long time and Holling took her out for valentines day showing that he is starting to like her too. This changed the way he looked at Romeo and Juliet.

  5. The relationship between Holling and Meryl lee in this chapter was surprising to me. The reason was because in the beginning when Holling asks Meryl lee out she is skeptical because she thought Holling was being rude to her. Then in the middle Meryl lee and Holling are at the Romeo and Juliet play and they were talking about the play and being good friends. Finally at the end of their interaction Holling tells Meryl lee about his dads construction ideas which she shares with her dad. The thoughts I had about Hollings first version of the essay was his first vernon he was saying that its was stupid about the poison and how it "almost'' killed her. I sort of agree with this statement because Holling most likely thinks that they should be smart enough to not drink something that almost killed another person. At the end when Holling changes his first version he thinks that Romeo was a jerk in the second version.

  6. The relationship between holling and Meryl Lee is they both liked each other in the beginning of the story. Meryl Lee stole the new ideas for the high school from holling. Holling just moves on. he doesn't really try to do anything he isn't supposed to do. Holling took Meryl Lee out for valentines day. that shows holling is starting to like Meryl Lee. This changes the way he looks at Romeo and Juliet.

  7. My thoughts on the relationship between Holling and Meryl Lee changed deeply when Holling asked Meryl Lee to go somewhere with him on Valentines Day. I say this because before Holling never mentioned having a crush on Meryl Lee at all. Suddenly he is asking her on a date which makes me feel that Holling is changed a bit and became a lot braver than before. My thoughts for the essays were that I think that depending on Holling's mood the content of the essay will either improve or become worse. Proving the point is when Holling is mad that Meryl Lee tricked Holling into giving her his dad's design, and Holling's first essay sounds angry and makes the book sound stupid. However when Holling forgives Meryl Lee, his essay sounds cheerier and more understanding for the book itself.

  8. The relationship between Holling and Mery-lee are that Merry-Lee has a big crush on holling. Also Merr-Lee is very sneaky towards Holling because she stole his ideas toward binding the new school. Hollings attitude toward this was that he moved on and didnt really care that much. Also the reason that affected Hollings first version of the essay was that Mery-lee said no to him on Valentines day. During the process of writing his paper, he wrote bad things about Romeo and Juliet. In conclusion, in his second version,(since he made up with Merr-Lee) he probably got a better grade and did a better job then his first time around.

  9. I think that the relationship between Meyrl-Lee and Holling has improved tremendously since the beginning of the story. In the beginning Meryl-Lee had a big crush on Holling and he thought it was plain annoying. Throughout the story Holling was still annoyed by most of Meryl-Lee's actions, but when Valentine's day rolled around he asked her out. She was hesitant though, because not long before that Holling had called her a blind mole. Because of these events Holling was feeling dark and grey, so those were the feelings he incorperated into his Romeo and Juliet essay. After a bit Meryl-Lee accepted Holling's date. Because of this Holling was feeling bright and happy, and he decided to make some revisions to the essay. In his second version of the essay he based it off of his newfound feelings for Meryl-Lee.

  10. During chapter February, Holling asks Meryl Lee to go on a date with him. My first thought was that Meryl Lee would ask Holling to a date not the other way around. Also in the chapter, Holling needs to write a essay about Romeo and Juliet. For his first essay, Holling talks about how Romeo is stupid and how he shouldn't have meet Juliet in the first place. But when Meryl Lee showed that she was crying under her sunglasses, Holling felt differently about Romeo, Juliet. He then made another essay about how he felt now about Romeo and Juliet.

  11. I THINK WHEN HOLLING WROTE HIS FIRST ESSAY, HE WAS MAD AT MERYL LEE BECAUSE HE THOUGHT SHE HAD GIVEN HER DAD THE PLANS TO THE NEW JR. HIGH SCHOOL BUT WHEN HE FOUND OUT THAT HER DAD TOOK THE PLANS, HOLLING GOT LESS MAD AND WASN'T MAD AT MERYL LEE ANYMORE SO HE DID A MORE ROMANTIC VERSION OF THE ESSAY.

    1. I agree with the part about the plans, but I think the second essay was also because he saw her crying

  12. My interpretation of when Holling asked Meryl Lee on a date was very surprising because Meryl Lee had a crush on Holling. When Holling wrote his first essay he was mad and made false information about Romeo. When he saw Meryl Lee crying he felt bad and made his essay good.

  13. I think that when Holing wrote his first essay he was mad at Meryl Lee. Holing was mad because Meryl Lee stole the plans for his dad's architect job. Later when he wrote the second essay he loved Meryl Lee and saw that she had been crying. Holing and Meryl's first date went pretty well. She didn't think he was cheep and they both had a great time.
